Groundwater science projects within the Thames Basin
An understanding of hydrogeological processes is usually developed at individual sites or river reaches. Transferring this site-specific understanding to the entire Thames Basin is problematic because of the increase in geological complexity at large scales.
As a result there are very few studies that consider the hydrogeology of the Thames Basin in its entirety.
However the introduction of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) asks that we adopt a basin-wide approach to water resource management and for this reason we have begun to look at basin-scale hydrogeological understanding.
Basin-wide projects
- Examining the geological controls on baseflow index (BFI)
- Relationships between lithology, basin form and hydrology
- Characterising the hydraulic properties of the river terrace deposits
Site specific projects
- Lowland Permeable Catchments (LOCAR) research programme
- Modelling groundwater flood risk in the Chalk aquifers of Southern England
- Groundwater and flooding in Oxford
