Groundwater systems analysis and management

Monitoring the level of groundwater in boreholes is key to understanding the resource.

Groundwater can provide a sustainable source of water to remote communities, e.g. Cannich and Tomich in Scotland.

This team aims to improve our understanding of groundwater resources, their movement and quality distribution in the context of the whole water cycle. We also study their impact on the surface biosphere using existing data in conjunction with specified data collection and monitoring exercises. Work includes the characterisation of groundwater quality and aquifer properties at regional and national levels and groundwater systems analysis. In collaboration with our partners, we are starting a new national survey of groundwater ecology. We are undertaking research to predict the impact of environmental change, including climate change, on the water cycle through integrated national and basin scale structures.
