Solid Earth Observing Systems:
A workshop to define the future needs of Solid Earth Infrastructure

14 April – 15 April 2014 University of Liverpool Central Teaching Hub

This workshop aimed to define the grand scientific challenges for the solid Earth community and the (observational) infrastructure needs to address these. It brought together the academic community, the data providers and end users. Its specific goals were::

  • To develop concepts for large infrastructure, in-situ and remote sensing and including analogue laboratories
  • To define the scientific added value of EU infrastructure such as EPOS, ECCSEL, ICDP, IODP
  • Earth science community development /building
  • To consider the benefits of relationships European and International Infrastructures
  • To consider how best integrate UK infrastructure into EPOS and international efforts.

The drivers included the potential availability of large strategic capital awards, the start of the EC’s Horizon 2020 programme and the increasing integration and harmonization of European national infrastructures, driven by projects such as EPOS and others on the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) roadmap.

Attendees

  • UK Geoscientists
  • Infrastructure (facilities, data centres, observatories, solid earth laboratory) leads
  • Scientists from interested research communities – data users and providers
  • NERC Geophysics and geodesy services and facilities
  • EPOS community: UK Steering Group, WP and WG leads, Infrastructure Leads
