Introduction

Several specialised habitats are found in the Mendip Hills, and they are all of restricted national distribution. Often of limited extent, such habitats are very important on account of the uncommon or rare species that are confined to them, or because of their exceptional biodiversity. These are:

• Limestone cliffs, crags, caves and screes
• Limestone heath
• Old lead workings
• Ash-lime woodland
