It comprises concentration-distance profiles of U in soil columns adjusted to different pHs and CO2 pressures. Two soil columns of uniformly packed, moist soil, one with U and the other without, were brought together and after 12 days the columns were section parallel to the joined column faces to determine concentration-distance profiles. Similar measurements were made for diffusion of the non-adsorbed Br ion and used to measure the soil diffusion impedance. The results were used to test a model of U diffusion and reaction in soil at scales appropriate for uptake by plant roots. The model allows for the speciation of U with hydroxyl, carbonate and organic ligands in the soil solution, and the nature and kinetics of sorption reactions with the soil solid. Excellent agreement between observed and predicted profiles was obtained using model input parameters measured or otherwise estimated independent of the concentration-distance profiles, showing that the model is a correct description of the system and all important processes are allowed for. The importance of the kinetics of U adsorption and desorption on the time-scale of diffusion through the soil is highlighted.
