In April 2012 the NERC agreed that the British Geological Survey could invest in membership of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) on behalf of the Earth science sector to build national capability for the UK geoscience community.
Geologists and geoscientists need access to key geological sections that are well constrained in terms of time and formation; this allows us to determine the processes of global change that affect the Earth and to understand the controls on resource development. We can also monitor and model natural hazards and fluid-related biological processes in the subsurface through instrumentation in ICDP-UK drill holes.
Through the unique capacities of scientific drilling ICDP-UK will provide exact, fundamental and globally significant knowledge of the composition, structure and processes of the Earth's crust.
