Examples of impacts of temperature rise for Europe

Increased risk of inland floods and more frequent coastal flooding may result from a rise in global temperature.

Exposure to heatwaves and wildfires could increase health problems for the population of Europe.

The IPCC have listed some examples of how a rise in global temperature will affect the regions of the world during the next 100 years.

For Europe this includes the following:

1. Climate change is expected to magnify regional differences in Europe 's environmental susceptibility. For example, there will be increased risk of inland floods and more frequent coastal flooding and increased erosion (from increased number of storms and sea level rise).
2. Mountainous areas will face glacier retreat, reduced snow cover and winter tourism, and extensive species loss (up to 60% of species may be lost by 2080).
3. In southern Europe higher temperatures and drought are predicted. This region is already vulnerable to climate variations and a worsening of conditions will result in water shortages, a drop in the potential to use hydropower to generate energy, a drop in summer tourism and, more generally, in crop productivity.
4. An increase in health risks for the local people because of exposure to heatwaves and wildfires.
