International Year of Planet Earth

What is International Year of Planet Earth

2008 has been proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Planet Earth.

The year aims to raise global environmental awareness, and will demonstrate the role Earth Scientists play in ensuring a safer, healthier and wealthier society.

To mark International Year of Planet Earth an all Ireland programme of events has been organised. These events include:

• public lectures
• exhibitions
• walks and talks
• special event weeks
• competitions
• school events
• publications

These events have been co-ordinated by the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland with the Environment and Heritage Service, National Trust and W5.
