GeoWeek | Mobilising the geoscience community behind an outreach/education initiative

At the 65th meeting of the ESEF it was agreed that the name of the initiative should be called GeoWeek and 5-13 May the date for its launch in 2018.

  • 137 people completed the online questionnaire and more than a third of the votes for the name of the initiative was ‘GeoWeek’
  • In the questionnaire returns, two of the nine-day ‘week’ option choices were far ahead of the others and were neck and neck, so we went for the one that did not coincide with the school holidays, of Saturday 5th May to Sunday 13th May 2018.
  • The name and dates were supported by the Earth Science Education forum (ESEF) and ESTA Council and the strapline of ‘Active geoscience week’ was added. This allowed us to generate this logo below
  • A GeoWeek Facebook community page has been set up. Contact John Stevenson, ESEF Secretary if you are interested in posting events or becoming a site administrator.

The ESEF called a special meeting on 17 November 2016 to explore how the geoscience community could harness its expertise and enthusiasm behind an education/outreach initiative.

For example

  • On a single day in May 2015 nearly 10,000 members of the public experienced 50+ geological field trips led by 500+ geoscientists across Spain
  • Canadian regions devised geoscience posters in collaboration with schools across the country
  • On Geoheritage Day in Ottawa, small groups of geoscientists stationed at sites of geoscientific interest successfully engaged the public across the city

Given these examples – what could we do?

The workshop was opened by a series of presentations that illustrated the kinds of intiatives underway in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

We have continued working on the 'Mobilising' initiative since our November 2016 meeting and you will find the results of our efforts attached as:
